How to Read a Sporting Event Odds Preview: A Practical Checklist

Before a major event, previews often list prices for the winner, spread and totals. This checklist shows how to read them with a probability mindset. Event-specific previews will follow on OddsOptics as major events approach.

Checklist

  1. Convert the prices. Turn each price into implied probability so favorites and underdogs are easy to compare.
  2. Remove the margin. For a two-way market, divide each implied probability by the total to estimate no-vig (fair) probabilities.
  3. Check line movement. Note the opening line, current line and the likely cause of any move.
  4. Review the data. Recent form, injuries, rest, matchups and venue or weather conditions.
  5. Compare sportsbooks. Look for the best price on the side you like.
  6. Set your limits. Decide your budget before the event, and stick to it.

Example of removing the margin

If both sides are -110 (52.38% each, total 104.76%), the fair probability of each is 52.38 / 104.76 = 50%.
