Before a major event, previews often list prices for the winner, spread and totals. This checklist shows how to read them with a probability mindset. Event-specific previews will follow on OddsOptics as major events approach.
Checklist
- Convert the prices. Turn each price into implied probability so favorites and underdogs are easy to compare.
- Remove the margin. For a two-way market, divide each implied probability by the total to estimate no-vig (fair) probabilities.
- Check line movement. Note the opening line, current line and the likely cause of any move.
- Review the data. Recent form, injuries, rest, matchups and venue or weather conditions.
- Compare sportsbooks. Look for the best price on the side you like.
- Set your limits. Decide your budget before the event, and stick to it.
Example of removing the margin
If both sides are -110 (52.38% each, total 104.76%), the fair probability of each is 52.38 / 104.76 = 50%.
